Keeping Curry on Hand. Queen Victoria loathed spicy food, but as Empress of India, she insisted that curry be available at all times in the event that a “visiting oriental” ever showed up unannounced at the palace doors. The food itself, of course, was probably not something to be desired by any visitor. It consisted of previously cooked food doused in curry powder.
